University of Maryland Enhances Flood Monitoring Network in Chesapeake Bay Region
The University of Maryland has expanded its Hydronet flood monitoring network with a new station at Breezy Point. This initiative aims to improve local flood forecasting and enhance community resilience against coastal flooding.

A new water-level monitoring station has been established at Breezy Point Beach, increasing the Hydronet network to 17 stations across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This expansion aims to provide critical real-time data for emergency management and local governments, enhancing flood preparedness in vulnerable coastal areas.
The Hydronet program addresses data deficiencies where federal and state sensors are absent, allowing communities to anticipate flood events and make informed infrastructure decisions. Planned growth will see the network reach approximately 40 stations by summer. The Breezy Point station, powered by solar energy, offers localized data that is crucial for public safety and flood management.
