UNMAS Enhances Mine Action and Weapons Management in Democratic Republic of the Congo
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is enhancing mine action and weapons management in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to address the threats posed by mines and explosive remnants of war. With support from MONUSCO, UNMAS has deployed an IED Disposal team in Beni and is facilitating the safe management of weapons and ammunition, amid concerns over approximately 950,000 illegally circulating weapons. The initiative aligns with the DRC's National Action Plan for Small Arms and Light Weapons Control and aims to strengthen the legal framework for mine action and improve the capacity for managing contamination.

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is coordinating mine action in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to eliminate threats from mines and explosive remnants of war. The UNMAS DRC program supports MONUSCO's mandate for civilian protection and state institution stabilization.
UNMAS has deployed an IED Disposal team in Beni to boost MONUSCO’s capabilities in IED management. Funding from MONUSCO has facilitated support for national authorities to safely manage weapons and ammunition.
The DRC faces widespread contamination by explosive hazards, with an estimated 950,000 illegally circulating weapons. UNMAS conducts explosive management activities in compliance with multiple Security Council resolutions and has transferred humanitarian mine action activities to the Congolese Mine Action Center (CCLAM).
A new National Action Plan for Small Arms and Light Weapons Control was launched in 2018, with ongoing support from UNMAS. The national strategy aims to strengthen the legal framework for mine action and enhance the capacity to manage residual contamination sustainably.
