Untreated Hydrogen Sulphide Emissions Affect Cork Suburbs
Untreated hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gases have been released in Cork suburbs due to operational failures at a wastewater treatment plant. The incident poses health risks and has negatively impacted residents' quality of life.

Untreated hydrogen sulphide emissions were reported from the Ballinure Header Chamber in Mahon, impacting residents' health and daily lives. Uisce Éireann acknowledged operational issues, with three out of four fan units underperforming, leading to the need for daily ventilation of the facility.
An investigation has initiated a capital project to replace extraction system components, currently in the design stage. The EPA is monitoring Uisce Éireann's response to these odour issues. Health risks associated with H2S exposure are recognized, including eye irritation and respiratory problems, raising concerns about long-term public health impacts.
