Urenco and Radiant Forge $4 Million Agreement for Advanced HALEU Fuel Supply to U.S. Market

NUCLEAR

Urenco has announced a significant $4 million deal with Radiant, aimed at supplying advanced High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuel to the U.S. market, a critical step in bolstering nuclear technology and energy security. This partnership underscores the collaborative spirit between the United Kingdom and the United States in advancing nuclear capabilities, particularly as both nations endeavor to lead the development of next-generation reactors.

Boris Schucht, Chief Executive of Urenco Group, articulated that this agreement is a testament to the strong global leadership of both nations in enhancing the nuclear fuel supply chain. He noted that the deal not only supports the burgeoning small modular reactor industry but also promises to create approximately 400 skilled jobs at Urenco's advanced fuels facility in Cheshire, which is currently under construction, co-funded by the UK government.

Dr. Rita Baranwal, Chief Nuclear Officer at Radiant, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the joint efforts of the U.S. and UK in propelling the nuclear industry forward. She remarked that the agreement represents a pivotal move towards building mass-produced nuclear reactors, necessitating a robust global supply chain to support such advancements.

The agreement is one among several initiatives aimed at revitalizing nuclear power infrastructure in the UK. In Northeast England, companies like X Energy and Centrica are planning to construct up to 12 advanced modular reactors in Hartlepool, while Holtec, EDF, and Tritax are working on advanced data centers powered by small modular reactors at the former Cottam coal-fired power station. Additionally, Last Energy and DP World are set to establish one of the world's first micro modular nuclear power plants, supported by £80 million in private investment.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described this UK-U.S. nuclear partnership as a catalyst for not only powering homes but also fortifying economies and communities. He projected that these commitments would lead to a new era of nuclear energy, reducing household bills over time while generating thousands of quality jobs in the immediate term.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband reinforced the vision of a nuclear renaissance, asserting that the collaboration with the U.S. would invigorate new developments and secure future technologies. He emphasized that nuclear energy would provide clean, domestically produced power, with the private sector playing a pivotal role in this transformation.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright commented on the opportunities presented under President Trump's leadership, highlighting the importance of international partnerships to meet rising energy demands and fuel innovation in the nuclear sector. He noted that today’s commercial agreements lay the groundwork for enhanced energy security and stronger nuclear supply chains across the Atlantic, setting the stage for a new era of cooperation and advancement in the nuclear field.
