Urenco Launches Net-Zero Heat Network Project at Almelo Facility in Netherlands
Urenco has initiated a net-zero project in Almelo, Netherlands, to recycle waste heat from uranium enrichment. The internal heat network will reduce natural gas consumption by 671 tonnes annually. The first phase includes a heat grid and utility building, with completion expected by 2029. A new office building at the same site features sustainable materials, achieving an MPG score of 0.7 and BREEAM Excellent certification, reflecting its low environmental impact.

Urenco has begun a net-zero project at its Almelo facility in the Netherlands, focusing on recycling waste heat from uranium enrichment. The internal heat network will generate hot water from residual heat and distribute it throughout multiple buildings, significantly cutting natural gas use by approximately 671 tonnes annually.
The project, which includes a heat grid and utility building, aims for completion by 2029 and aligns with Urenco's 2030 net-zero goals. Additionally, a new office building at the site achieved an MPG score of 0.7, improving by 30% on legal requirements, and received BREEAM Excellent certification for sustainability.
