Urenco USA Plans 50% Capacity Increase for Uranium Enrichment in New Mexico
Urenco USA aims to boost uranium enrichment capacity by nearly 50% at its Eunice facility, addressing rising domestic demand for low enriched uranium (LEU). This expansion is critical for enhancing U.S. energy security, especially following restrictions on Russian uranium imports, which account for over 70% of U.S. uranium supply.

Urenco USA plans to expand its uranium enrichment capacity at the Eunice, New Mexico facility by 50%, adding up to 2.1 million separative work units (SWU) and bringing total output to over 7 million SWU annually by 2036. The expansion responds to increasing domestic demand and the need for a reliable supply of LEU, crucial for U.S. nuclear power plants.
This follows recent legislative actions restricting Russian uranium imports, historically a significant source for U.S. utilities. The company has invested over $5 billion since 2006 to establish a secure domestic supply chain.
Current expansions at the facility, including additional capacity and refurbishments, are scheduled for completion by 2027, with regulatory reviews anticipated. With the industry facing tightening supply and rising uranium prices, the expansion positions Urenco USA as a key player in the U.S. nuclear fuel supply chain.
