Urker Innovation Enables Partial Electrification of Ferries to Terschelling

NATURAL GAS

Shipbuilding in Harlingen is modifying Rederij Doeksen's ferries, the Willem de Vlamingh and Willem Barentsz, to incorporate partial electrification. These catamarans, operating on the Harlingen-Terschelling route, currently use LNG.

The retrofit includes installing permanent magnet motors behind the main engines to convert excess power into battery charging, making the vessels capable of emission-free operations in ports. A new energy management system has been developed to optimize power use.

Additionally, the ships will receive bow thrusters for improved maneuverability. The battery compartments are fireproof, enhancing safety. The project is a collaborative effort with Urk companies, facilitating effective communication and swift execution.
