Ursula Von der Leyen Advocates for Solar Energy and European Energy Union
Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that solar energy is the most economical and secure source of energy. In a plenary session in Strasbourg, she highlighted that in 2025, electricity from gas will cost over €100 per megawatt hour, while solar energy will only cost €34. She emphasized the need for a federal approach to energy integration in Europe to reduce prices and enhance accessibility.

Ursula Von der Leyen, in a Strasbourg plenary session, declared solar energy as the cheapest and safest source. She noted that electricity from gas will average over €100 per megawatt hour by 2025, compared to €34 for solar energy.
Von der Leyen stressed the necessity for a unified energy union to lower prices and increase accessibility, addressing the issues of high prices due to lack of interconnections and dependence on fossil fuels. She indicated that investments in low-emission energies are crucial and highlighted that last year, for the first time, more electricity was produced from solar and wind than from fossil sources combined. The European Commission has proposed market integration and oversight measures needing swift implementation.
