US Air Force to Achieve Initial Operating Capability for Boeing-Saab T-7A Red Hawk by September 2027
The US Air Force received its first Boeing-Saab T-7A Red Hawk trainer jet on January 9, marking a shift to a digital cockpit. A total of 14 T-7A aircraft will be delivered to Air Education and Training Command, with initial operating capability expected by September 2027 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. The T-7A is being introduced to replace the aging Northrop T-38 Talon, which has been in service for over 60 years.

The US Air Force (USAF) received its first Boeing-Saab T-7A Red Hawk trainer jet on January 9, transitioning to a digital cockpit. A total of 14 T-7A aircraft are scheduled for delivery to the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), with initial operating capability expected by September 2027 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.
This upgrade is necessary as the Northrop T-38 Talon, in service for over 60 years, can no longer meet training demands for fifth-generation fighters. AETC is the sole contract holder for the T-7A, with other military services considering its adoption based on AETC's findings.
