U.S. Air Force to Operate Retired F-117 Nighthawk Jets Until 2034

DEFENSE

The U.S. Air Force will continue to operate retired F-117 Nighthawk stealth jets until at least 2034. Originally retired in 2008, 45 of the 64 built remain airworthy, primarily used for training and experimentation rather than combat.

The aircraft are based at Tonopah Test Range Airport in Nevada. They serve as 'red air' adversaries in training exercises and as test assets for radar and infrared systems. The F-117 was first introduced in 1983, known for its precision strike capabilities, and has seen combat in conflicts including the Gulf War and Iraq.

The aircraft features low observability technologies and is powered by General Electric F404-F1D2 engines. Its limited payload consists of two internal weapon bays for precision bombs. The fleet will be gradually reduced through controlled demilitarization and museum transfers.
