U.S. Army Approves XM204 Terrain-Shaping Munition for Urgent Materiel Release in Europe

DEFENSE

The U.S. Army's XM204 interim top-attack munition received Urgent Materiel Release approval and was fielded in Europe on December 4, 2025. Managed by Project Manager Close Combat Systems at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ, and developed in partnership with Textron Systems, the XM204 completed Low-Rate Initial Production in September 2025.

It was deployed to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Germany, where New Equipment Training was provided to prepare for Army-wide use. The training included eight Observer Coach/Trainers from the Joint Multinational Readiness Center.

The XM204 is designed for terrain shaping operations and features standoff and top attack capabilities. It autonomously deploys submunitions to detect and defeat enemy vehicles and includes safety features to minimize post-conflict risks. The XM98 Emplacement Trainer was also fielded to the regiment as part of ongoing training initiatives.
