U.S. Army Awards $150M for Advanced Thermal Imaging Systems in Combat Vehicles
The U.S. Army has awarded a $150 million contract modification for Third Generation Forward Looking Infrared systems to enhance the XM30 and M1E3 Abrams. This investment underscores a strategic shift towards advanced thermal imaging for improved battlefield effectiveness.

On April 29, 2026, the U.S. Department of War announced a $150 million modification to DRS Network & Imaging Systems LLC for the production of Third Generation Forward Looking Infrared Dewar Cooler Benches.
This modification increases contract W909MY-22-C-0023’s total value to $213,138,361 and includes manufacturing and delivery of these critical components, with work taking place in Melbourne, Florida, expected to complete by January 31, 2029. The funding, which includes $20,195,591 in fiscal 2025 Army procurement funds, supports the U.S.
Army's sensor modernization initiative for next-generation combat vehicles. The focus on Dewar Cooler Benches is vital as they maintain infrared detectors at low temperatures, enhancing sensitivity and image clarity against modern threats. The emphasis on these systems indicates sustained demand for advanced thermal imaging capabilities.
