U.S. Army Contracts for 82 AeroVironment P550 Drones to Enhance Reconnaissance Capabilities
The U.S. Army has awarded a $117.3 million contract to AeroVironment for 82 P550 unmanned aircraft systems, enhancing battalion-level reconnaissance capabilities. This acquisition aligns with the Army's strategy to increase drone density and reduce reliance on higher-echelon aviation assets, particularly in light of operational insights gained from Ukraine.

On June 3, 2026, the U.S. Army contracted AeroVironment for 82 P550 drones under a $117.3 million deal, aimed at boosting long-range reconnaissance directly under battalion control. This marks the first major procurement since the drone's introduction in October 2024 and ties into the Army's initiative to enhance tactical drone capabilities post-Ukraine operational assessments.
The P550, weighing 24.9 kg, features vertical take-off and landing, a maximum flight altitude of 14,000 ft, and can operate within a communications range of up to 60 km. It provides reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition capabilities while accommodating multiple payload types.
The program's flexible architecture allows for integration of various sensors, enhancing operational versatility. The Army anticipates further additions to the Long-Range Reconnaissance program as the demand for affordable and effective drone systems grows.
