The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved ASARCO's project for a tailings storage facility in Pinal County, Arizona, to support its copper mining operation. The facility will cover 2,636 acres of a 7,402-acre disposal site.
ASARCO has acknowledged that mining activities might cause environmental harm, impacting 29 federally protected historical sites and potentially rerouting sections of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. The proposed plan includes no obligations to mitigate noise and visual impacts on the adjacent White Canyon Wilderness and White Canyon ACEC.
