U.S. Army Halts Lewis Cannon Testing in Adirondacks Due to Safety Risks
The U.S. Army has ceased its contract for cannon testing in the Adirondacks due to safety concerns regarding projectiles potentially hitting state roads. The Army's DEVCOM issued a stop-work order in February 2023, with the project initially contracted at $692,000. The Adirondack Park Agency is reviewing the proposed testing range, which has faced multiple setbacks and allegations of ethical conflicts. The hearing is set for April 22, 2023, but ongoing legal challenges may delay it further.

DEVCOM issued a stop-work order in February 2023 for the $692,000 project, which had been under review by the Adirondack Park Agency since 2021. The agency's public hearing to assess the project's suitability is now scheduled for April 22, 2023, though legal challenges may delay it. The Army determined it could conduct testing internally without needing the proposed firing range.
