A multinational team from the Trauma Hemostasis Oxygenation Research Network (THOR), including U.S. Army Reserve Lt. Col.

Kevin R. Ward, visited Israel to assess the Israel Defense Force's (IDF) use of blood products in casualty care following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. The delegation, hosted by IDF Surgeon General Brig.

Gen. Elon Glassberg, reviewed medical practices and innovations at various IDF sites, including the Military Medical Academy. The IDF's evacuation strategy embeds Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers within combat units, resulting in a decrease in mortality rates from 15% to 6.5% over the past 20 years.

Key innovations include the use of freeze-dried plasma and whole blood in the field. The IDF has also developed an electronic casualty card system to improve data transmission across medical echelons. Ward emphasized the need for the U.S. to enhance its blood product capabilities in future conflicts, drawing lessons from the IDF's integrated military and civilian medical approach.
