U.S. Army Tests Containerized Autonomous Kitchen for Enhanced Field Meal Access
The U.S. Army's 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command is testing the Sustained Autonomous Meals (SAM) system, a mobile kitchen designed to deliver fresh meals in field environments. The containerized system can produce over 120 meals per hour and allows Soldiers to order meals based on their schedules, improving operational flexibility and quality of life. Currently in initial testing on the Korean Peninsula, SAM aims to support Army modernization efforts and enhance Soldier readiness.

The 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command is testing the Sustained Autonomous Meals (SAM), a mobile kitchen concept built on the success of Market 19. SAM is a 20-foot container that provides on-demand meals in field settings, enhancing operational flexibility.
It can produce over 120 meals per hour with minimal personnel and allows Soldiers to access freshly prepared meals based on their schedules. The system incorporates robotic arms for meal preparation and storage capabilities, supporting Army modernization by integrating commercial technology. Currently in testing on the Korean Peninsula, SAM's performance will inform future applications across the Army.
