U.S. Army Tests Northrop Grumman's 50mm Cannon for XM30 Vehicle Replacement Program
The U.S. Army is testing Northrop Grumman's 50 mm XM913 Bushmaster Chain Gun as part of the XM30 program, which aims to replace the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The XM30 is designed to enhance lethality, survivability, and upgradeability through a modular open systems approach.
The XM913 cannon, which fires 50x228 mm ammunition, features dual-feed capability, programmable air-burst, and armor-piercing rounds, improving accuracy and effectiveness against both armored and unarmored targets. This new ammunition suite allows for tailored engagement, reducing response time in combat situations.
The integration of the XM913 with computerized fire control systems is expected to enhance target engagement capabilities significantly. Northrop Grumman emphasizes that the XM913 offers increased lethality and accuracy compared to the Bradley's existing armament, while also ensuring training and maintenance commonality to facilitate rapid readiness.
