U.S. Army to Test Next-Gen Abrams and XM30 Vehicles at Fort Hood and Fort Irwin
The U.S. Army is deploying prototype M1E3 Abrams tanks and XM30 Infantry Combat Vehicles to Fort Hood in Fall 2026 for training. This initiative marks a significant move towards modernizing the armored combat capabilities of the Army, with full evaluations planned for Spring 2027 at Fort Irwin.

Prototype M1E3 Abrams tanks and XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicles will arrive at Fort Hood, Texas, in Fall 2026, with soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team engaging in training. Following this, a full rotation at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, is scheduled for Spring 2027, assessing both platforms under realistic conditions.
The M1E3 features a 10-ton weight reduction and a hybrid engine that improves fuel efficiency by 50%. The XM30 is designed to replace the M2 Bradley, focusing on current battlefield threats. Both vehicles will support the Army's Transform in Contact initiative, aiming to integrate advanced technology into operational units. Results from the Spring 2027 rotation will determine the effectiveness of these next-generation systems.
