US Army Unveils Quantum Sensor for 3D RF Wave Direction Detection
The US Army has developed a quantum sensor that accurately measures the 3D direction of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, enhancing battlefield situational awareness. The US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command has introduced a quantum sensor capable of measuring the full 3D direction of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, a first in using quantum technology for such measurements. This device utilizes Rydberg atoms to determine electromagnetic field strength, polarization orientation, and propagation direction, achieving an accuracy of approximately two degrees.
Unlike traditional sensors that measure in one direction, this sensor provides a comprehensive view of the electromagnetic landscape, crucial for navigating complex battlefield environments. Its broadband capability enables operation across the entire radio-frequency spectrum, making it suitable for diverse signal detection.
