U.S. Completes Destruction of Chemical Weapons Stockpile Under International Supervision
The U.S. has successfully destroyed its entire chemical weapons stockpile, marking a significant achievement in arms control and reinforcing commitments to the Chemical Weapons Convention. The destruction process began in 1990 and concluded with the final munitions eliminated at the Pueblo Chemical Depot, Colorado, and Blue Grass Army Depot, Kentucky, in 2023. The Army has transitioned its focus to ongoing support for the treaty and the management of recovered chemical materials.

The U.S. has completed the destruction of its chemical weapons stockpile, a historic achievement in arms control. With over 30,000 tons of chemical warfare agents once stored at various locations, the elimination marks the first complete destruction of a class of declared weapons of mass destruction under international supervision.
The process began in 1990, culminating in 2023 with the final munitions destroyed at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado and Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky. The Department of the Army approved the termination of surety status for BGCA on December 10, 2025. The Chemical Materials Activity will continue to support treaty obligations and manage recovered chemical materials across the country.
