U.S. Estimated to Spend Up to $700 Billion to Acquire Greenland

DEFENSE

The U.S. could incur costs up to $700 billion to acquire Greenland, based on estimates from scholars and former officials. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is not for sale, and its officials have rejected U.S. claims of acquisition.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials to discuss U.S. intentions. Greenland's Foreign Minister stated they do not wish to be governed by the U.S. The U.S. currently has military capabilities in Greenland under an existing agreement.

Some Trump administration officials suggest a potential compact of free association as an alternative to purchase. Greenlanders overwhelmingly oppose becoming part of the U.S., with 85% rejecting the idea. Recent bipartisan legislation aims to prevent the Defense Department from asserting control over NATO member territories without approval.
