US Government Invests Significantly in BioMade Pilot Plants for National Security
The US Defense and Energy Departments have allocated hundreds of millions to BioMade's pilot plants to address a critical infrastructure gap in biomanufacturing. This initiative aims to enhance domestic production capabilities, reduce reliance on overseas facilities, and secure intellectual property.
The US federal government has committed over $450 million to BioMade since its inception in 2021, with significant contributions from the Department of Defense. BioMade aims to establish pilot plants in Minneapolis, Hayward, and Ames to support biomanufacturing projects, which currently number 92.
The California facility, expected to open in spring 2026, will feature food-grade testing capabilities and 4,000-liter fermentation tanks. The Iowa facility, in collaboration with Iowa State University, will be operational by 2028, equipped with 10,000-liter fermentation tanks. This funding strategy leverages both federal and private-sector investments to advance biomanufacturing while addressing national security concerns related to food and material supply chains.
