US House Committee Report Links DOD Research Funding to Chinese Military Entities
The US House Select Committee on China has released a report alleging that the Department of Defence (DOD) under the Biden administration permitted extensive US taxpayer-funded research collaborations with Chinese entities associated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The report cites over $2.5 billion funding for more than 1,400 projects, which raises national security concerns.
It highlights a project involving the Office of Naval Research and NASA, collaborating with Arizona State University and Beihang University, linked to the PLA. Another example includes a 2024 study on nanoscale optical devices funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, involving the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), known for hypersonic weapon development. The report calls for urgent reforms to prevent US research funding from supporting China's military and surveillance capabilities.
