Scientists at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) have made significant progress in solid-fuel ramjet (SFRJ) technology by utilizing optical diagnostics to observe combustion processes. This method enhances understanding of high-performance propulsion systems, moving away from traditional trial-and-error approaches.

SFRJs use atmospheric oxygen for combustion, increasing energy efficiency and range by 200-300%. The NRL team faced challenges in observing combustion due to extreme conditions but implemented specialized techniques to measure flame temperatures and fuel behavior.

They also visualized fuel vapor before ignition, providing insights into hydrocarbon species. Research included examining baseline fuels and composite formulations to enhance energy density. Combining experimental data with high-fidelity simulations, the team validated models capturing intricate flow dynamics. These advancements aim to reduce development risks and costs, accelerating SFRJ technology maturation for next-generation defense systems.
