U.S. Navy Awards $19.5M Contract to General Dynamics for Zumwalt-class Support and Resumes Railgun Testing in New Mexico

DEFENSE

The U.S. Navy awarded a $19.5 million contract modification to General Dynamics Bath Iron Works for engineering support on Zumwalt-class destroyers, scheduled through March 2027. Most work will occur in Bath, Maine, focusing on maintaining design data and managing upgrades for the advanced warships.

Concurrently, the Navy resumed electromagnetic railgun testing in February 2025 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, after prior budget pauses. The trials aim to gather performance data for the railgun, which uses electromagnetic forces to launch projectiles at high velocity, without traditional propellants.
