U.S. Navy Integrates StormBreaker Smart Bomb into F/A-18 Super Hornet Operations

DEFENSE

The U.S. Navy has declared initial operational capability (IOC) for the GBU-53/B StormBreaker on F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, allowing fleet squadrons to regularly use the weapon for precision strikes. The StormBreaker, with a weight of approximately 93 kg, can engage targets at standoff ranges up to 45 nautical miles.

Its tri-mode seeker combines multiple targeting technologies, enhancing its ability to engage mobile threats in adverse conditions. This integration transforms the Super Hornet into a primary platform for networked glide bombs, increasing the number of targets serviced per sortie and reinforcing the carrier's operational capabilities.

The StormBreaker is already in service with the U.S. Air Force and aligns with joint operations, simplifying logistics and allowing for real-time target sharing among allied forces.
