U.S. Navy Plans Replacement of MK 20 Electro-Optical Gun Targeting System for Surface Warships

DEFENSE

The U.S. Navy is initiating plans to replace the MK 20 electro-optical sensor systems and MK 46 Optical Sight System for surface warships. The Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division has released a notice for the Electro-Optic/Infrared Sight System project to encourage competitive proposals.

The new systems will interface with the Navy Gun Weapon System and will be used on Ticonderoga-class cruisers, Arleigh Burke class destroyers, and Coast Guard vessels. A prototype selection could occur by October 2026, with first deliveries expected by April 2027. The MK 20 EOSS has been in use since 2005 and features advancements for integration with the MK 34 Gun Weapons System.
