U.S. Navy Prioritizes Maintenance in Next-Gen Submarine Design
The U.S. Navy is addressing maintenance challenges in its Virginia-class submarines by integrating sustainment into the design of the SSN(X) attack submarines. With 18 out of 50 attack submarines currently undergoing maintenance, the Navy aims to enhance operational availability and reduce repair delays.

Currently, 18 of the 50 U.S. Navy attack submarines are in maintenance, impacting operational readiness. In response, the Navy is revising its maintenance strategies for the Virginia-class submarines and focusing on sustainment in the design of the new SSN(X) class.
This approach includes lessons learned from more than a million parts on the Virginia-class, with a small fraction requiring redesigns for better maintenance. The Columbia-class submarines are also being constructed with input from ship maintainers to avoid past sustainment issues.
Similarly, the U.S. Coast Guard is emphasizing sustainment in its modernization efforts, establishing a logistics center to improve the integration of maintenance considerations during acquisitions.
