U.S. Navy to Boost Production of Hammerhead Anti-Submarine Mines via General Dynamics Contract

DEFENSE

The U.S. Navy is set to increase production of the Hammerhead anti-submarine mine system through a contract modification with General Dynamics Mission Systems. This adjustment aims to fulfill operational fleet needs beginning in fiscal year 2027 and will be awarded without full competition, as General Dynamics is deemed the only provider capable of timely delivery.

The Hammerhead system operates autonomously, using underwater sensors to detect and engage submarines. The Navy is also exploring deployment via unmanned underwater vehicles to enhance operational range while mitigating risks from adversary submarine fleets. This initiative underscores a strategic shift towards bolstering undersea warfare capabilities.
