U.S. Navy Transfers Base Maintenance Command to Navy Installations Command

DEFENSE

As of Feb. 22, 2026, the U.S. Navy has transitioned full command of installation maintenance and public works to Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). This change empowers installation commanding officers, enhancing their authority to manage approximately 1,700 personnel who previously worked for Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC).

The objective is to streamline decision-making, allowing commanders to respond effectively to infrastructure needs critical for mission support. The transition will not result in job losses, and planning for further public works functions transfer is in progress.
