U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Proposes Regulations for Fusion Energy Industry
FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) proposed a draft rule to regulate nuclear fusion energy, focusing on the possession and production of byproducts such as tritium. This move follows a meeting between fusion industry leaders and U.S.
Department of Energy officials in December 2022, where funding for fusion projects was discussed. The NRC intends to regulate fusion under a less stringent framework than for fission technology. Fusion proponents aim to generate electricity for the grid by the 2030s, but face challenges, including the need for continuous fusion reactions and durable materials to withstand neutron bombardment.
