US Sanctions Rwanda's Defense Force and Four Officials for Support of M23 Rebels
The US has imposed sanctions on Rwanda's Defense Force (RDF) and four military officials due to their support of the M23 rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The sanctions follow the capture of the Congolese city of Uvira by M23 fighters shortly after the signing of the Washington Accords in December 2025. The US Treasury cites direct operational support to M23 and human rights abuses as key reasons for the sanctions, aiming to uphold the commitments of the peace agreement.

The US Treasury Department has sanctioned Rwanda's Defense Force (RDF) and four senior officials, including army chief Vincent Nyakarundi, for supporting the M23 rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This action follows the violation of the Washington Accords, signed on December 4, 2025, aimed at peace in the region.
The Treasury stated that RDF's backing has enabled M23's territorial gains and human rights abuses. The sanctions block US assets and prohibit transactions with the designated individuals, emphasizing the US commitment to peace in the region.
