US Transport Aircraft in Sofia for Equipment Retrieval Following Deployment
A US military transport aircraft landed at Sofia Airport for routine logistics related to the withdrawal of tanker planes. The Bulgarian Defense Minister clarified the operation's normalcy and confirmed no restrictions on US military aircraft using civilian airports.

A US C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft was deployed to Sofia Airport to collect equipment left from the recent withdrawal of 10 KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft that had been stationed at Vasil Levski Airport. Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov emphasized that this operation is routine and adheres to established procedures with necessary diplomatic approvals in place.
He also announced that Bulgaria's proposed defense budget for 2026 allocates 51% for personnel, 14% for operational costs, and 35% for capital investments, exceeding the minimum requirement of 20%. The increased capital investment aims to modernize the Bulgarian Armed Forces after years of underfunding.
