USA and Kazakhstan Launch Cooperation on Small Modular Nuclear Reactors
The USA and Kazakhstan have initiated a civil nuclear cooperation focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs). This includes delivering a simulator for training and conducting a feasibility study for potential SMR construction in Kazakhstan. The first phase involves supplying an SMR simulator to the nuclear physics institute in Almaty. Sargent & Lundy will assess suitable American SMR options for deployment. The initiative aims to enhance energy capacity amid existing electricity shortages in Kazakhstan and to support regional nuclear development.

The USA and Kazakhstan have commenced a civil nuclear cooperation to facilitate small modular reactors (SMRs) in Kazakhstan. This collaboration includes the delivery of an SMR simulator to the nuclear physics institute in Almaty and a feasibility study by Sargent & Lundy on potential American SMR options.
The initiative aims to train Kazakh specialists in SMR operation. Kazakhstan, facing electricity shortages, is exploring SMRs to expedite new power generation, as larger reactors using Russian technology may not be operational until the mid-2030s. The partnership may enhance US influence in the region's energy sector.
