USACE Completes Key Rehabilitation of Riverside Levees in California
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Riverside County have advanced the Riverside Levees Rehabilitation Project, set to complete by September 2023. This project, critical for flood protection, encompasses substantial repairs and innovative modifications to enhance levee resilience against extreme weather events.

The Riverside Levees Rehabilitation Project in Riverside, California, is on track for completion by September 2023, marking a significant milestone in flood risk management. Originally constructed in the 1950s, the two levees are crucial for protecting over 4,300 structures, including more than 4,000 homes and infrastructure valued at approximately $1.5 billion.
Following damage from storms in 2010 and 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers utilized Public Law 84-99 for repairs, which included reinforcing rock slope protection and implementing innovative 'launchable stones' for enhanced scour protection.
The project now focuses on the left side of the levee system, following successful rehabilitation of the right side. Continued collaboration among stakeholders is essential for maintaining flood defense systems and improving community resilience.
