USACE Rebuilds Weather Stations in California for Flood Risk Management
In 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rebuilt two weather stations in Sequoia and Kings National Parks—Upper Tyndall and Mitchell Meadow—to enhance flood risk management. The new 30-foot towers, equipped with updated sensors and data loggers, will provide crucial data on snowpack and rainfall for the Kern and Kings River watersheds. The construction utilized helicopter transport for equipment due to the remote locations of the stations.

In 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rebuilt two weather stations in Sequoia and Kings National Parks: Upper Tyndall and Mitchell Meadow. The Upper Tyndall station, operational since 2017, was leaning after heavy snowfall, while Mitchell Meadow collapsed in 2023.
Each tower, now 30 feet tall, includes new sensors and data loggers to measure snowpack and rainfall. Construction involved helicopter transport for equipment and materials. The data collected aids water management and flood risk forecasting for the Kern and Kings River watersheds.
