USAF's $4.5 Billion B-21 Raider Project Reshapes Ellsworth Air Force Base
The USAF is investing $4.5 billion to modernize Ellsworth AFB and other bases for the B-21 Raider, its primary stealth bomber. This initiative aims to streamline production and enhance operational capability, addressing past inefficiencies seen with the B-2 Spirit.

The USAF's $4.5 billion investment for B-21 Raider production includes significant upgrades at Ellsworth AFB, aimed to support the introduction of at least 100 stealth bombers by 2027. The modernization encompasses infrastructure enhancements such as a 95,000-square-foot hangar and expanded facilities to accommodate increased personnel and operational needs.
The Raider's design aims to reduce maintenance complexity compared to the B-2, with a projected mission-capable rate exceeding 80%. Ellsworth will adapt to host the B-21 with essential upgrades, including a $130 million runway modernization, facilitating heavy operations. This overhaul is critical as the USAF prepares to counter emerging threats, particularly in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions.
