USS Gerald R Ford: Key Component of US Navy's Power Projection in Indo-Pacific
The USS Gerald R Ford (CVN-78), the lead ship of the US Navy's Ford-class aircraft carriers, has a displacement of nearly 100,000 tons and represents a significant advancement in naval aviation and power projection. It is the most expensive warship ever built, costing approximately $13.3 billion, with an additional $5 billion in research and development.
Construction took nearly 12 years, and the US Navy plans to build a total of 10 ships in this class. The Ford-class is equipped with advanced systems, including the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), which enables faster launch rates and compatibility with various aircraft.
Powered by two A1B nuclear reactors, the carrier can operate for 20-25 years without refueling. Although defense analysts express concerns over large carriers' survivability against modern missile threats, the Ford-class features layered missile defenses and is expected to remain central to US naval operations well into the next decade.
