USS South Dakota Returns to Groton After 6-Month Deployment as Part of U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet
The USS South Dakota, a Virginia-class attack submarine, has returned to Groton after a 6-month deployment. Assigned to Submarine Squadron 4 and operating within the Atlantic Fleet, the submarine's missions included intelligence collection and coordination with allied navies.
It displaces approximately 7,900 tons and measures over 377 feet in length, powered by a single S9G nuclear reactor allowing extended submerged operations without refueling. Equipped with advanced sonar and armed with Mk 48 torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles, the submarine plays a crucial role in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare while maintaining a low acoustic signature. Its return highlights the ongoing U.S. naval presence and strategic aims in various maritime theaters.
