The Muruntau mine in Uzbekistan produced 2.68 million ounces (83.3 tonnes) of gold in 2025, securing its position as the second largest gold-producing mine worldwide. The top position is held by Nevada Gold Mines in the U.S., which produced 2.7 million ounces (83.9 tonnes) of gold, representing over 2% of global output.
The Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex, primarily a copper producer, ranked fifth, with plans to double copper production by 2030, which may enhance its gold recovery as well. Other notable mines include Indonesia's Grasberg and Russia's Olimpiada, demonstrating a diverse range of production technologies. The competitive landscape could shift as modernization initiatives unfold in the sector.
