Vandenberg Space Force Base Collaborates with Universities on Sonic Boom Research in California

DEFENSESPACE ECONOMY

Vandenberg Space Force Base is partnering with Brigham Young University and California State University Bakersfield on the ECOBOOM program to study rocket launch acoustics and sonic booms. Since June 2024, the initiative has collected data from 23 rocket launches, utilizing eight acoustic monitoring stations across Santa Barbara and Ventura counties to analyze noise impacts on local communities.

The program aims to balance national defense needs with environmental stewardship. Initial findings indicate seasonal variations in sonic boom patterns, with larger areas of impact observed in fall, winter, and spring.

The data informs operational planning to minimize noise disruptions during launches. Vandenberg's conservation efforts include protecting the Western Snowy Plover and ongoing educational programs for local students. The base supports critical national defense operations and is a key site for U.S. space missions.
