Vanuatu Government Launches Pico-Hydro Power Stations on Pentecost Island with Japanese Support
The Vanuatu Government, alongside Japan's Ambassador and UNDP, launched three pico-hydro power stations in Waterfall, Melsisi, and Larimaat on Pentecost Island. Constructed under the Vanuatu Green Transformation Project, these stations will provide reliable electricity to 706 connections, benefiting 3,274 residents directly. The project, a USD 4.62 million investment, aims to enhance access to clean energy and supports Vanuatu's goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.

On March 24, 2026, the Vanuatu Government launched three pico-hydro power stations in Waterfall, Melsisi, and Larimaat on Pentecost Island, built under the UNDP Vanuatu Green Transformation Project with Japan's funding. These stations, which collectively generate 63 kW, will supply renewable electricity to 706 connections, impacting 3,274 residents.
The project also established a 34 km electrical distribution network and included technical training for local operators. This initiative aligns with Vanuatu's National Energy Road Map goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030 and is part of a broader USD 37 million Pacific Green Transformation Initiative.
