Venezia to Launch 90 Hydrogen Buses by 2026, Achieving Over 50% Zero-Emission Public Transport

HYDROGENSYNTHETIC FUELS

Venezia plans to introduce 90 hydrogen buses, including 75 standard and 15 articulated, for urban and suburban routes by 2026. This initiative, alongside 33 electric buses and 30 already in operation, aims for over 50% of local public transport to be zero-emission.

The total investment is approximately €58 million, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The buses, produced by Solaris, are currently being delivered. A green hydrogen production facility is being constructed by Green Hydrogen Venezia, a joint venture between Eni and AGSM AIM Power, with an 8-megawatt capacity to supply 1,700 kilograms of hydrogen daily.

The facility is expected to be operational by summer 2026. The first four hydrogen buses began testing in September 2023, with refueling at Eni's station in Mestre. Venezia aims to become a national leader in hydrogen transport, following pilot projects in other Italian cities.
