Verra Launches New Emission Reduction Methodology for Maritime Transport; India Issues GHG Guidelines for Green Hydrogen
Verra has introduced a new methodology for quantifying emissions reductions in maritime transport under the Verified Carbon Standard, aiming to support low-carbon alternative fuels and bridge regulatory gaps in global trade. Concurrently, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released guidelines for measuring GHG emissions in green hydrogen production, aligning with ISO 19870:2023.

Verra's new methodology, VM0053 Alternative Low-Carbon Fuels for Shipping, offers a structured framework to quantify emission reductions in maritime transport. Applicable to all ships, it aims to facilitate financing for low-carbon fuels and provide mechanisms for sourcing and verifying emissions reductions.
In India, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued guidelines on June 18, 2026, for measuring GHG emissions in green hydrogen production, introducing five scenarios for different water sourcing arrangements. Default emission factors have been established for various water treatment processes.
New facilities have 90 days to comply, while existing ones have 180 days. These initiatives could significantly impact emission reduction strategies in both sectors, enhancing compliance and accountability.
