On December 9, 2025, the Veterans Community Project (VCP) Longmont held its first holiday event, 'Light the Village,' celebrating the completion of a tiny home community for veterans. The project, initiated by VCP in 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri, aims to address veteran homelessness and support those with various discharge statuses.
The Longmont village, which opened in June 2025, includes 26 homes, five of which are designated for families. This approach allows veterans and their families to stay together, including pets. The initiative began after Longmont passed a resolution to eliminate veteran homelessness, with construction starting in summer 2022.
Residents like Army veteran Patrick Putnam, who moved in during construction, found stability and community support. Putnam, now in permanent housing, plans to volunteer at VCP Longmont, emphasizing the importance of community connections in aiding veterans.
