The U2xU5 subway expansion in Vienna will produce 2.8 million bricks from excavation materials, promoting sustainability. Wiener Linien and Wienerberger are collaborating to utilize high-quality Viennese clay excavated from the construction site.
The project aims to reduce landfill waste and support a circular economy by turning excavation materials into valuable raw materials. The bricks will be available in May for construction projects, with enough supply for approximately 1,000 single-family homes. The initiative is part of Vienna's broader climate goals, aiming for climate neutrality by 2040, and it sets a precedent for environmentally friendly construction practices in the region.
