Vietnam aims to generate VND16 trillion ($605 million) annually from reservoir aquaculture, supported by a strategy for 2026-2030. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment highlighted the potential of nearly 6,750 irrigation and 700 hydropower reservoirs, totaling over 50 billion cubic meters in capacity.
However, experts cite challenges including unclear policies on water surface allocation and inadequate infrastructure. Proposed solutions include developing a tilapia value chain and amending existing laws to facilitate aquaculture operations.
To meet targets, significant policy reforms and technological advancements are necessary, particularly in domestic fish breeding capabilities. Illegal fishing practices also need stricter enforcement.
