Vietnam Navy Demonstrates Ka-28 Helicopters Firing APRP-2 Missiles in Anti-Submarine Drill

DEFENSE

The Vietnam People's Navy showcased Ka-28 helicopters firing the APRP-2 missile during an anti-submarine warfare drill. This exercise highlighted the integration of the APRP-2 into Vietnam's naval aviation capabilities, emphasizing its operational readiness rather than mere stockpiling.

The Ka-28, a specialized anti-submarine variant, utilizes a full sensor suite including sonobuoys and dipping sonar for submarine detection. The APRP-2 missile, weighing 575 kg and capable of engaging submarines at depths of up to 600 meters, employs a solid-fuel rocket motor and has a terminal speed of 62 knots.

The missile's effectiveness is enhanced by its acoustic guidance system, achieving an engagement range of 1.5 to 2 kilometers. The exercise also underscored the cooperation between Ka-28 helicopters and surface combatants, reflecting Vietnam's advancing capabilities in undersea warfare and its commitment to maintaining credible anti-submarine forces in the South China Sea.
