Vietnam PM Directs Measures to Ensure Power Supply from 2026 to 2030
Vietnam's Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has issued a directive to ensure a reliable electricity supply from 2026 to 2030, assigning responsibilities to government ministers and state-owned energy companies. The plan addresses rising power demand and aims to prevent shortages during key political events, focusing on accelerating power generation projects, enhancing supply in northern Vietnam, and exploring imports from Laos and China. Future developments will include LNG-fired plants, hydropower expansion, and offshore wind projects, with an emphasis on establishing a competitive power market to support national energy security and economic growth.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has issued Directive No 01/CT-TTg, emphasizing the need for a reliable electricity supply for production and daily life from 2026 to 2030. He assigned responsibility to government ministers and state-owned energy companies, including Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group (PVN).
The directive aims to address rising power demand and prevent shortages during significant political events, including the implementation of the 14th National Party Congress resolutions. Authorities are instructed to accelerate power generation and transmission projects, prioritize electricity supply enhancements in northern Vietnam, and import power from Laos and China.
Future projects will focus on LNG-fired plants, hydropower expansion, and offshore wind developments, with preparations for the Ninh Thuận nuclear power plants expedited. Additionally, a competitive power market is deemed essential for national energy security and economic growth, with a projected electricity demand increase of 12-15% during this period.
